According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Alabama's poverty rate was 16.8 percent.. Alabama's poverty rate is above the national average and the eighth highest in the country. The Community Action Association of Alabama, a non-profit organization working with local groups serving low income Alabamians, says the figures show the state needs to do more to combat poverty. Lukata Mjumbe, the Executive Director for the Community Action Association of Alabama, discusses programs aimed at addressing poverty issues. Interview begins about 3 minutes into the show.
